Decoding Academic vs. General Training decision

I always experience a feeling of immense pleasure when I help IELTS aspirants in shaping their practice in the right mould by writing blogs or guiding them personally. I keep receiving emails from IELTS candidates after reading my blogs. They share how they benefitted from the blogs. In my last blog for IELTS students, I had written ‘Decoding Pronunciation for IELTS’. In this blog, we focussed on the aspect of pronunciation and how it plays a pivotal role in the speaking module. Pronunciation can impact 25% of the IELTS score. The blog also covers the DIY approach to improving pronunciation. In the present blog, we cover the two versions of IELTS.

Being an IELTS aspirant, you would already know that there are two versions of IELTS test – Academic and General Training. Two modules are common while two are different for academic and general training. The reading and writing modules are different while the listening and speaking modules are common. To illustrate, 3 reading passages are provided in academic reading and these 3 are relatively lengthy and more complicated as compared to the 4-5 reading passages provided in general training reading.

Generally, those who are willing to study abroad should choose an academic module and those who are willing to work abroad should choose the general training module. But for making the choice of the IELTS version this is not the sole criterion. The decision should be based on thorough research and discussions with experts. There are some rules which need to be checked for the applicability of the IELTS version. Simply speaking you should check which IELTS version applies to you, academic or general training. Some candidates make a mistake in choosing the right type of IELTS test. They start preparing for the wrong IELTS module and waste some of their considerable time.
